What is cardiothoracic surgery?

Cardiothoracic surgery involves the surgical treatment of the heart, lungs, and other areas of the chest cavity (thorax), such as the ribs or esophagus. This includes various congenital or acquired conditions such as arrhythmia or heart disease, cancerous tumor removal, lung diseases, esophageal abnormalities or trauma, infections, or removal of a foreign body, among many others.

Depending on what type of surgical treatment your dog or cat requires, cardiothoracic surgery may involve an incision along the sternum, the breastbone, or between the ribs. To minimize post-operative pain, we prefer to use the least invasive surgical techniques and routinely use thoracoscopy for diagnosis of chest, heart, and lung disease.

Each pet family receives a personalized plan for their pet’s procedure, pain management, recovery, rehabilitation, medications, and follow-up care. Providing the best possible quality of life for your pet is always our goal.
