Living Our Core Value of Compassion: Parker’s Care

When Parker the Husky arrived at our hospital, he was in critical condition and needed highly specialized care. He had undergone surgery elsewhere for a complex perineal hernia, but complications quickly followed. He developed significant fluid overload, suffered an acute kidney injury and both of his surgical incision sites began to break down.

For nearly a month, our emergency, critical care, surgical and nursing teams worked together to care for Parker. They carefully managed his fluid imbalance, supported his kidney function and adjusted his treatment as his condition changed. Once he was strong enough, the surgical team performed additional procedures to repair his perineal hernia and address the dehiscence of his abdominal incision.

Throughout those weeks, Parker’s care required more than medical expertise. It required patience, persistence and above all else, compassion. In time, all of that care paid off. After nearly a month in the hospital, he made a full recovery and proudly carried our Certificate of Bravery.

We’re grateful we had the opportunity to care for Parker, and we’re even more grateful to see him walking out the door on his own four feet.
